When plotting data, I tend to focus on the data-to-ink ratio slightly different another way.

I focus mostly on having a plot that clearly conveys the data displayed, so it’s easy to understand “what the data is saying”. That’s how I apply the data-to-ink ratio in practice.

All the ink I add to plots are either data points, or something else that helps understand the data, like legends or highlights on certain areas of the plot.
